Pinburgh 2013

Your name is hanging in the rafters, Becker. Are you ready to defend your title?

PAPA Pinball!

The world’s largest match-play pinball tournament will return this April 11-14 at PAPA World Headquarters. Due to the style of tournament, pre-registration is required and will open at PAPA.org at noon today. Pinball fanatics from all over the world are encouraged to attend. Over 200 games will be prepared for the tournament with an additional 250+ games available in the practice bank for anyone who walks through the doors and drops a few tokens. Divisions for all skill levels will be available. There will be at least $30,000 in prize money up for grabs, over 100 prize payouts, and when the smoke clears, one pinball player will stand alone as Pinburgh 2013 Champion.

An important note: Pinburgh 2013 will have a cap of 400 players.  We encourage early pre-registration to avoid disappointment!  We’re sorry we can’t accommodate more players, but we only have so many gnomes.

100% of registration fees will be returned to players as prizes; if and when over 200 players register, the prize pool will begin to grow.  Pinburgh 2013 could have the largest prize pool of any pinball tournament ever held, and you can make that happen by signing up and bringing friends.  New for 2013, we will be tracking players by their “affiliation” (a league or other pinball group), and players can provide this information when they register.

Several events will be held around the city in the days leading up to Pinburgh 2013. The details of the pre-Pinburgh tournaments are subject to change, but plenty of notice will be given for all players if any changes occur. Check back often!

All signed up and ready to go! I completed sign up at around 12:13 PM, 13 minutes after registration opened up, and I received a player number of 139. That means 39 people signed up in 13 minutes? It would be amazing if the 400 person limit was reached!

  2. bowen

That’s right, Sanjay. We are already closing in on the 100 player mark in the first few hours. Thanks to everyone for your interest, and let us know what questions you have about the format, site, travel, anything.

I’m in…was a little shocked about the $50 dollar increase this year. Wish we could have had a little more warning about that. That said, after thinking about it I decided it’s probably for the best. I mean, what’s an extra 50 bones for a weekend long event that happens only once a year. And hopefully…the boost to the prize pool will encourage more people to come from farther away. So you everyone not from Pittsburgh, get registered so that that extra fifty bucks becomes worth it for people like me not likely to compete for the big money.

We felt it was a better solution to raise the entry fee once, so we can keep it the same for a long time to come. I understand it is a significant investment of time and money, and apologize to anyone who chooses not to attend because of the cost. For out-of-towners the entry fee is actually a fairly small percentage of the total cost of the trip (airfare, hotel, food), and we’re honored to have so many people deciding to join us in spite of all that expense.

The number of registered players is already closing in on the number we expected for Pinburgh 2011, and it’s only been seven hours. Thanks everyone, and we’ll do our best to make it worthy.

  5. Sweet! Registered.

For anyone on the fence, you should come. Coming next to last in the bottom division last year was still a fantastic time that its worth driving 6 hours to get there to do it again, its that much fun!

  6. Womble

Wish I could participate, but I’ll have to wait until PAPA Australia.

  7. Chris

I registered Saturday the 12th @10AM central. Already up to 251! It would be awesome if the number of players allows for 32 finalists instead of 24 from each division. Thanks Kevin, Bowen, Mark. You guys are great!

  8. Chris

If I read Sanjay’s post correctly then player #251 = 151 players registered?

  9. bowen

That’s correct. The eventual number of finalists will be determined by the size of the field, Chris, so you may find more finalists than are currently guaranteed.

  10. Bowen, where can I get the the Pinball Asylum (PBA) registered for the group affiliation survey?

I am signed up and ready to play!

Hi Bowen, same question. The Magic City Pinball League(MCPL) is not in the drop down box on the registration form. We are in our 11th season and are recognized by the IFPA. Maybe this question should go to Kevin?

BTW, we already have 4 players registered and making the trip from Birmingham, Alabama!

  12. bowen

That question is ridiculously hard to answer accurately with how often people are signing up, so the best answer is “more”.

  13. James Swain Jr

All registered. Now to figure my travel arrangements.

    Is it here yet??

  14. Just had a quick question about the entree fee. I got two different answers, so I wanted to go right to the source. Does the entree fee just cover your place in the tournament and shirt, but you have to pay for the games you play, or are the tournament games included in the cost? I saw how you can add tokens with the entree fee and didn’t know if that was to cover the cost of the tournament games or the rest of the games that aren’t being used in the tournament that weekend.

  15. bowen

The entry fee is exactly that: a fee for entering the tournament. Games are set for two tokens per play, typically, and all the money in tokens is donated to charity. Expect to spend about $20 in tournament tokens.

You also said “and shirt”, but that is not part of the entry fee, either.

There is also a separate “entree fee” for those wanting fancy dinners, provided by our caterer!

What time is the pingolf on thursday (hoping it’s in the late afternoon/early evening:)?

  17. Hey All,

I get in late Monday night. Could someone post details about the rest of the tourneys throughout the week? I will be playing Tues, Wed, Thursday, and Pinburgh. I am having trouble finding any info about start times.
