Pinburgh 2013: Affiliations

Today, the 334th player signed up for Pinburgh 2013, pushing the tournament’s cash prize total over the astounding $50,000 mark.  There are only 66 spots left in the tournament — please don’t forget!  Advance registration is required.  Credit cards won’t be charged until March, so sign up and deal with it later.

Important update: there will be shuttle service between Pinburgh and the Courtyard Settlers Ridge hotel from Friday through Sunday.  More details to come, but we strongly encourage players to use the shuttle or carpool — there will not be enough parking onsite for everyone.

We have compiled a list of all 334 players and their “affiliations” — each player was asked to give one when they signed up.  Players are listed in registration order.  If you forgot to give an affiliation or need to change yours, write a comment here or contact us in the usual ways.  If a player is not listed here, they are not registered!  Surprised to see a friend’s not listed?  Chase them down, the space is going fast.

UPDATE, Wednesday morning: Since the initial post on Tuesday afternoon, 21 more players have registered.  There are now 355 players registered and 45 more spots available in the tournament.  We said the space is going fast, but now it’s really going fast.

UPDATE 2, Wednesday 3pm: Ten more people have signed up since the last update.  There are now 365 players registered and 35 more spots available.

UPDATE 3, Wednesday midnight: Fourteen more people have signed up since the last update. We have also reserved a spot for the winners of the last two PAPA Circuit events in Portland and Louisville.  If either winner is already registered for Pinburgh, or elects not to play in Pinburgh, the spot will be released to the first player on the waiting list. There are now 19 more spots available for Pinburgh 2012. The tournament is likely to hit capacity sometime on Thursday, January 31, so act now. Also, anyone want to break a PPL/FSPA tie?

UPDATE 4, Thursday 9 am: It’s the home stretch!  There are only a few spots remaining as of early this morning.  Sign up quickly and you can still get in or get a very early waitlist spot.  The waiting list will be accommodated in order, and there are usually a few cancellations.

Here we go…

Nice! It would seem we may just get to that 400. Almost like adding Pinburgh 2011 to Pinburgh 2012. Going to be freaking nutz!!! Best tournay of the year and it keeps getting bigger and better.

Love the showing from PPL…although I notice a couple who must be embarassed of us (didn’t list their affiliation). Hopefully we do well this year!

At least 40 or so international folks too (yes I counted canada) That’s great.

Sorry, we forgot to paste in the last page of names! One eagle-eyed reader noticed a missing number — there was one cancellation out of the 335 reserved spots to this point, and we don’t re-use numbers.

I have a question about posters + advertising.

Is it permissible to buy or print out the Pinburgh 2013 flyer (https://papa.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Pinburgh-2013.jpg) and post it in a public place? Our pinball league location has a spot for doing such things. Is there a specific size its intended to be printed at?

Feel free to print the poster. That’s why we put it up. The typical size is 11×17.

You forgot to give The Gooch an affiliation… assuming he has registered. MHPL. Unless he is gonna make up some heretical 1up affiliation. I love apostasy.

Seriously…I can’t believe this is 50 spots from filling up 400 already. Still more than 2 months away. This is seriously bananas. Unreal how great and popular this event has proven to be. Scary to think of what if might eventually be if it continues to grow.

I know that more people means more banks, which means much more work…but I would be curious to hear what the plan for next year will be. Especially now that that 400 number seem more like a question of “when” not “if.”

Over $52,000!!! Does that make this the largest pinball prize pool ever? It’s certainly bigger than any previous papa tournament.

Anybody who prints that flyer should tape that number over the 30,000 +. I’d say $20,000 is a pretty big +.

  10. bowen
    January 30, 2013 at 8:23 am

Yes, it is the biggest prize pool of any PAPA tournament, and we think it may be the largest prize pool over. (Bally Supershooter?)

Any player can contact us directly to change or add their affiliation, but we will not make those changes on behalf of another player. “The Gooch” should contact us.

Also, I’m actively trying to convince CBS’s Sunday Morning to come and do a story about Pinburgh. It didn’t happen last year, but I think it would be a good fit. They are always doing off beat interesting human interest stories. I saw a story on their about people who are crazy about typewriters once, one about a “cryptozoology” convention, one about a convention of women named betty, and one convention for people who love antique toasters.

I love that show and those kind of stories. But if that makes the show, the return of pinball and the largest match play tournament in the world would make a decent story. Plus we certainly have a few interesting personalities. (Bowen).

There’s the link if anyone else wants to encourage them.

Is there someone we can contact to have our affiliation changed?

  14. Rob Wintler-Cox
    January 30, 2013 at 3:59 pm

We’re way more interesting than a convention of women named Betty! Now, if it were men named Betty that would be a different story.

      Carpool. Shuttle. PLEASE.

  18. Andreas Thorsen
    January 30, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Any chance the shuttle will stop by any other hotels than Settlers Ridge, like Double Tree or Clarion?

    1. bowen
      January 30, 2013 at 6:06 pm

The shuttle will stop at the Extended Stay and Courtyard Marriott. The Doubletree and Clarion are in a very different direction, and we do not recommend either hotel. You may be able to arrange local shuttle or taxi service through the hotel, but the shuttle will not be going in that direction. Sorry!

  19. January 30, 2013 at 10:57 pm

In the Bally Supershooter, the top three finalists got cars. First place got a 280zx, which had a base price of about 10k. That’s around 27k in today’s dollars. However, third place got a B210, which was probably around 3k back then.

At the same time, my guess is hotel and maybe airfare may have been comp’ed for the 20 finalists. So, hard to say.

I could break the FSPA /PPL Tie if I claim FSPA membership since I was a member there recently. Then again I also played in the first Pittsburgh leagues, so I can claim that too and it’s a tie again. 🙂

Mike: Wanna trade for binary 11111111? =)

  23. ZEN
    January 31, 2013 at 4:27 am

No, the vacant building there should be turned into PAPA Hotel and Pinball Resort. Then we can get good deals on rooms and not have to worry about rental cars and shuttles. Imagine the possibilities. With all revenue going to benefit the Replay Foundation, of course.

  24. Todd Williams
    January 31, 2013 at 7:19 am

Very impressed with the FSPA turnout. I mean, you should honestly give the tie break to them anyway. Pinburgh is right in our back yard and we have a large league so are numbers are to be expected…but all those folks are traveling a reasonable (though still pretty close) distance. Well done FSPA.

Do we have to have an affiliation? I’ve played in no leagues or any groups. Just have a few pin friends in my drought of an area. No affiliations tho.

    January 31, 2013 at 8:34 am

Affiliations are not required, so it’s fine. We’ll be giving more details about what we plan to do with them, but it has no effect on your direct performance in the tournament.
