Pinburgh 2013: 2 Months Away

A few things to note for Pinburgh 2013, which starts two months from today!

The amazing PAPA technicians are preparing 200 pinball machines for competitive play. In previous years, we have had a brief practice session on Friday morning, but noticed that there was no time to fix games that had any problems during the practice session.  For 2013 the PAPA Circuit Final will be held on Thursday, and we will have a practice session on Thursday, with enough time afterward to fix more problems.

After discussion, we have decided not to offer a practice session on Friday morning, to preserve the sanity of our technicians and to preserve the play quality of the machines.  PAPA HQ will still open Friday at 9am, with 250+ playable pinball machines, and a special free warmup tournament!  This tournament will run only from 9am to 11am on Friday, and all Pinburgh players who have completed tournament registration may enter.  Showing up early is a good idea.  Completing registration on Thursday is an even better idea.

We will also be extending the Thursday practice session, which will now run from 10am to 1pm.  Our technicians need the rest of the day to put out all the fires you will cause.  Don’t forget to thank them profusely, because without the work of the technicians, Pinburgh can’t happen.

Many players still have not listed an affiliation; the full roster with affiliations is below.  Poke people you know who should be part of your group!

Several people have asked about the parking situation at PAPA HQ for Friday, April 12.  Parking is more difficult on Friday than other days because other local businesses are operating.  We are running shuttles to the Courtyard, Hyatt, and Extended Stay, and strongly encourage players to use them as early as possible on Friday morning.  PAPA HQ has 30 dedicated parking spaces, and we will soon be giving players the opportunity to reserve these 30 spaces for a carpool of at least four tournament players.  (Get your buddies ready.)  While there is other parking nearby, there is no guarantee that these spaces will be available for players.  Such parking is first come, first served.

Lastly, we will be reopening the Pinburgh waitlist at 6pm EST on Wednesday, February 13 (tomorrow).  If you missed the opportunity to enter, this is your chance to get on the list — you will then have to wait!  (Wait… list.)  We can’t say how many players will get through the waitlist, which is currently 17 deep.  But if you missed out, get on the list, then cross your fingers or break others’.  If you’re at or near the top of the waitlist, be ready for an invite email.

Thanks and we’ll see you soon!  Ask any questions or add your player affiliation by commenting on this post.

I think most swedes are carpooling by default, so if that means a shot at guaranteed parking. Please keep us updated.

Its great if carpooling means a shot at guaranteed parking.
The first post needs editing rather than moderating. 🙂

If you bring more than 4 players per vehicle, will priority be given to those vehicles for the reserved spots?

No, priority will be given to the players and vehicles that reserve the spots when we make this available (soon). While having more than 4 players per vehicle is polite, and definitely do so if you can, it’s not necessary nor will special priority be given. Players reserving spots will need to list who they will be carpooling with when they reserve the spot; we will have someone in the parking lot to assign spaces and verify the reservation.

      More details soon.

    PARKING MAP?

If i remember correctly, there was a lot of chants on “Move Your Car” last year, which i enjoyed very much. The negative side of that is not really knowing if you are parked in a bad place or not.

If not too much trouble i suggest publishing a parking map saying where parking is permitted around the PAPA facility. I would also suggest for the future to partner up with a parking lot nearby (if one exists) that has plenty of parking and run a shuttle to that.

Pinburgh Team – we love everything that you do!

Thanks for the idea. We are planning to place no-parking signs in places where it would be trouble to park, everywhere else should be okay (“should”). We definitely looked into large parking lots; there is a Park and Ride lot nearby but it is only for bus passengers, and they check.

If you get there early enough you will probably find something. We must humbly request carpooling if you plan to park at PAPA HQ, even if you’re not taking one of the assigned spaces.

The parking-space signup will happen sometime next week.

I am starting to think that people like me (who find better deals on hotels with no Pinburgh shuttle) should carpool to the Shuttle locations instead of driving to PAPA HQ.

That idea assumes no problem with these Shuttle hotels having people migrate from other places and using their lot. From my experience, the hotels i have stayed in would never know the difference.

Not a great solution, but something that could be facilitated through this site (or other internet avenue) by giving people looking to carpool from non-shuttle hotels a place to post where they are staying. If it as simple as asking our sponsor hotels if they would mind people parking in their lot to take the Shuttle, then maybe that could happen?

or you could tell me you’ve already thought of it ! …lol

We have already asked the sponsor hotels, and they do not allow non-guests to park in their lots. None of these hotels, to my knowledge, asks its guests to leave their car information.

    Thanks for the idea!

I hope that when you do open up the chance to reserve a spot you do so in the evening rather than during the day when lots might not have access to a computer. Make it fair and all that.
