A note from your friendly Lyons Spring Classic tournament director, Adam Lefkoff.
The 11th Annual Lyons Spring Classic will be held on Friday, May 22nd through Sunday, May 24th, 2015 (Memorial Day Weekend). Friday will consist of practice and a 9 hole pin-golf tournament. Saturday will consist of 3 rounds of 4 player groups competing on machines from all eras. These Saturday matches will determine seeding for a head-to-head match play, double elimination bracket finals. Note that Lyons will not reseed groups based upon the results from the previous round, but rather randomly setup all three rounds ahead of time to ensure 9 unique opponents, 9 unique games, and a reasonable WPPR-ranked distribution for all players.
For the head-to-head final rounds, matches on the losers’ side of the bracket will be best-2-out-of-3 and matches on the winners side will be best 2-out-of-3 for the round of 32, and then best 3-out-of-5 from that point forward. The higher seed will receive choice of game or order in the first game of each match. The loser of the previous game will receive the same choice in games 2 and 3. The top 16 players from the group phase will earn a first round bye for finals, while the bottom 16 players from the group phase will start match play with one “loss” on the losers side of the bracket.
Due to the limited space and tight confines of Lyons Classic Pinball, this tournament will be capped at a maximum of 64 players. We have no idea whether this tournament will fill up quickly (or at all), but if you plan to play in it, pre-register as soon as possible.
Registration is $40 per player + cost of games (pay upon arrival).
The tentative schedule is as follows:
Friday, May 22nd: LCP opened from 3:00pm til 11:00pm. Practice and last
minute registration. There will also be a 9-hole pingolf tournament on Friday night. Note that players do not have to compete in the pingolf on Friday to be eligible for the weekend’s main tournament.
Saturday, May 23rd:
9am check-in and warmup.
9:30am – 12:30pm: Round 1 (played in 2 separate shifts)
12:30pm – 3:30pm: Round 2 (played in 2 separate shifts)
3:30pm – 6:30pm: Round 3 (played in 2 separate shifts)
6:30pm – 9pm: any playoffs and round of 32 on winners side
9pm – 11:30pm+: losers side round of 16, winner side round of 16
Note: since all the groups during the day will be pre assigned, each player will know when his or her shift is not playing, meaning that scheduling lunch and dinner will be easy. A number of food options exist within walking distance, including the always-excellent Oskar Blues Brew Pub next door.
Sunday, May 24th:
9am check-in and warmup.
9:30am – 5pm+: Match Play.
Finals will hopefully be done by 5pm, but the final schedule will ultimately depend on the length of the matches. Because Lyons Classic Pinball has such a great variety of games, the caveat in head-to-head play will be that you can only choose a game once all weekend. Players may have to compete on a game more than once, but they may only choose it for themselves once.
Please note that games are always changing at Lyons Classic Pinball. Some games may not be used in the tournament, such as Hercules, Baby Pacman, and Joust. Some games may also be available for the tournament that are not listed.
Please note that if the tournament runs behind schedule, the tournament director reserves the right to adjust the number of games played in each round, or to make similar adjustments to speed up the event.
